New Journal Paper
A new journal paper has been published at the IEEE Journal of Selected Topics on Quantum Electronics, a work coming out from the colaboration between CTTC, UPC, ACREO and IGNIS/Syntune. The paper Modulated Grating Y-Structure Tunable Laser for Wavelength-Routed Networks and Optical Access, by Josep M. Fabrega, Bernhard Schrenk, Francesc Bonada, José A. Lázaro, Marco Forzati, Pierre-Jean Rigole and Josep Prat, shows the feasibility of fast tunable lasers as high-speed transmitters for wavelength routed networks.
Six papers accepted at OFC/NFOEC 2012
December 13th, 2011 - Six papers have been accepted for presentation at the Optical Fiber Communication Conference and Exposition (OFC) and The National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference (NFOEC), that will be held on March 6-8, 2011, at Los Angeles Convention Center in Los Angeles, California, USA. The first two papers Experimental assessment of a combined PCE-RMA and distributed spectrum allocation mechanism for GMPLS Elastic CO-OFDM Optical Networks, and Interworking between OpenFlow and PCE for Dynamic Wavelength Path Control in Multi-domain WSON are joint works with the KDDI R&D Labs (Japan). The third paper entitled Experimenting Hierarchical PCE Architecture in a Distributed Multi-Platform Control Plane Testbed is resulting from a joint activity under the framework of the ICT IP STRONGEST project with Telefonica I+D (Spain), CNIT (Italy), and Nokia Siemens Networks (Germany).
Finally, the last (but not least) three papers are works carried out entirely by the CTTC Optical Networing Area within the framework of the European research project STRONGEST (ICT-FP7-247674) and the Spanish research project DORADO (TEC2009-07995) entitled Experimental demonstration of a Virtual Optical Network Resource Broker and Compositor for dynamic GMPLS WSON infrastructure services , Experimental Validation / Evaluation of a GMPLS Unified Control Plane in Multi-Layer (MPLS-TP/WSON) Networks , and Experimental demonstration of a hybrid operated MPLS-TP transport network for dynamic Ethernet service provisioning and restoration.

Nov. 17th, 2011 - A new journal paper has been accepted for publication at the Optical Express Journal, a work led by CTTC and co-authored by KDDI R&D. The paper Dynamic virtual link mesh topology aggregation in multi-domain translucent WSON with hierarchical-PCE, by Ramon Casellas, Ricardo Martínez, Raül Muñoz, Lei Liu, Takehiro Tsuritani, Itsuro Morita and Munefumi Tsurusawa, shows a H-PCE based implemented solution for path computation using CTTC-PCE implementation.

Nov. 2nd, 2011 - A new journal paper has been accepted for publication at the Optical Express Journal, a work led by KDDI R&D and co-authored by CTTC ONA. The paper Field and lab trials of PCE-based OSNR-aware dynamic restoration in multi-domain GMPLS-enabled translucent WSON, by Lei Liu, Ramon Casellas, Takehiro Tsuritani, Itsuro Morita, Shuichi Okamoto, Ricardo Martínez and Raül Muñoz, presents an architecture for dynamic restoration in multidomain WSON and using CTTC-PCE implementation.

New ACP2011 conference paper
Aug, 23rd, 2011 - The paper Experimental demonstration of service recovery for uncompressed video stream in GMPLS controlled WSON with PCE-based dynamic lightpath restoration, a joint work led by KDDI R&D, has been accepted for oral presentation at the Asia Communications and Photonics Conference and Exhibition (ACP 2011), that will be held in Shanghai, China, on November 13-16.
Chapter co-authorship in the forthcoming Springer book "Optical Transmission"
Jul 28th, 2011 - Michela Svaluto Moreolo has co-authored the Chapter State of the art on transmission techniques, specifically contributing to the Section Optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing, in the new Springer book Optical transmission, edited by A. Jul 7th, 2011 - Ricard Vilalta has been granted with the Best Student Paper Award at the IEEE International Conference on High Performance Switching and Routing (HPSR) 2011 for the paper co-authored with Raul Muñoz, Ramon Casellas and Ricardo Martinez entitled Design and performance evaluation of a GMPLS-enabled MPLS-TP/PWE3 node with integrated 10Gbps tunable DWDM transponders.
Five papers accepted at ECOC
June 28th, 2011 - Five papers has been accepted for presentation at the 36th European Conference on Optical Communication 2011 (ECOC 2011) that will be held on September 18-22, 2011 in Geneve, Zurich. The papers Dynamic Virtual Link Mesh Topology Aggregation in Multi-Domain Translucent WSON with Hierarchical-PCE, and Lab Trial of PCE-based OSNR-aware Dynamic Restoration in Multi-domain GMPLS-enabled Translucent WSON (this later, accepted as invited paper) are joint works with the KDDI R&D Labs (Japan).
The paper Experimental Evaluation of a Full-Meshed Domain Abstraction Design Model for Reduced State Information Dissemination in Multi-domain PCE-based WSONs is resulting from a joint activity under the framework of the ICT IP STRONGEST project with the UPC (Spain). Finally, the last (but not least) two papers are Dynamic Distributed Spectrum Allocation in GMPLS controlled Elastic Optical Networks and Lab Trial of a GMPLS controlled MPLS-TP Packet Transport Network with Source/PCE Path Computations, works carried out entirely by the CTTC Optical Networing Area.
New Public-funded project
May 16th, 2011 - The Spanish Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación has funded the thematic network project FIERRO (Future Internet: Eficiencia en las Redes de Altas Prestaciones) within the framework of Plan Nacional de Investigación Científica, Desarrollo e Innovación Tecnológica 2008-2011 - subprograma de acciones complementarias a Proyectos de Investigación Fundamental No Orientada (TEC2010-12250-E). The project is led by UPCT and constituted by 21 Spanish groups. FIERRO aims at building a platform to create synergies and close collaboration among the different members with expertise in the Internet topic.

Two papers have been accepted for oral presentation at IEEE Conference on High Performance Switching and Routing (HPSR) that that will be held in Cartagena, Spain on 4 - 7 July 2011. The paper Using a model-driven architecture for technology-independent scenario configuration in networking testbeds, authored by F. Galan, D. Fernandez, J.E. Lopez de Vergara, and R. Casellas, has been published in IEEE Communications Magazine, vol. 48, n.12, pp. 132-141, December 2010. It is the result of a joint collaboration between Telefónica Investigación y Desarrollo, Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, Universidad Autónoma de Madrid and the Centre Tecnològic de Telecomunicacions de Catalunya.

Five papers have been accepted for oral presentation at Optical Fiber Communication Conference (OFC) that will be held March 6-10, 2011, at the Los Angeles Convention Center in Los Angeles, California, USA. The papers Lab Trial of Multi-Domain Path Computation in GMPLS Controlled WSON Using a Hierarchical PCE, Virtualizing ADRENALINE testbed for deploying dynamic GMPLS-controlled WSON as a service and Experimental Study on the Impact of Regenerator Placement Strategies when Dynamically Provisioning in Translucent GMPLS WSON Networks, are led by the CTTC Optical Networking Area. The later is resulting from a joint activity under the framework of the NoE BONE project with the UPC (Spain), UPCT (Spain) and and NIT (Poland). The other two papers SOA/REAM as Vector Modulator for QAM Upstream and All-Optical Intra-PON Data Routing Between ONUs with a MG-Y Tunable Laser as 2.5 Gbps Burst-Mode Transmitter are joint works in collaboration with UPC (Spain), Alcatel-Thales III-V Labs (France), Acreo (Sweden) and Syntune (Sweden).

The Autonomous Government of Catalonia (Generalitat of Catalunya) has funded the industrial research project SILVIA (Serveis InteL.ligents de Validació de la Internet Avançada) within the program ajuts per al desenvolupament de projectes tractors en els àmbits d' e-infraestructures dins el marc de la Inforegió - REGIO 2010. The project is led by Orange Catalunya Xarxes de Telecomunicació, SA, and CTTC Optical Networking Area work involves the deployment of a GMPLS control plane for a Wavelength Switched Optical Network (WSON) and its integration with i2Cat ARGIA system.

Laia Nadal, awarded with a FPI fellowship from the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovaton, has joined the CTTC Optical Netwokring Area to carry out a PhD Thesis in Elastic Optical Networks (Adaptive Optical OFDM) associated to the Fundamental Research Project “Design and evaluation of intelligent optical networks based on hybrid nodes with Ethernet and wavelength switching” (DORADO). Sep 3rd, 2010 - New Industry-funded project
KDDI R&D Labs (Japan) has awarded an industrial grant to the CTTC Optical Networking Area in order to develop the research project Inter-domain all-optical transport Networks - Phase 4 (RAION4), covering research on architectures for intelligent translucent Wavelength Switched Optical Networks (WSON) with PCE-based path computation. It starts on September 1st 2010 and ends on March 31st 2011.

In the scope of the CELTIC TIGER2 project, CTTC partipates in a Joint demonstration event with Alcatel Bell Labs Lucent France and Marben Products, that will take place in Future Network & Mobile Summit 2010. 16-18 June 2010, Florence, Italy. The demo shows a multi-domain establishment of Ethernet connections on top of a Wavelength Switched Optical Network (WSON).

The paper Lab-Trial of Multi-Domain Lightpath Provisioning with PCE Path Computation combining BRPC and Path-Key Topology Confidentiality in GMPLS Translucent WSON networks is a joint work in collaboration with the KDDI R&D Labs, and the paper Experimental Demonstration and Comparison of Distributed and Centralized Multi-domain Resilient Translucent WSON is led by the KDDI R&D Labs in collaboration with the CTTC Optical Networking Area. The third accepted paper is Experimental Evaluation of Dynamic PCE-based Path Restoration with Centralized and Distributed Wavelength Assignment in GMPLS-enabled Transparent WSON networks.

Feb 8th, 2010 - FPI PHD Fellowship in Optical Networking
The Optical Networking Area of the Centre Tecnològic de Telecomunicacions de Catalunya (CTTC) offers a Fellowship (FPI) from the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation (MICINN) to carry out a PhD Thesis associated to the Fundamental Research Project “Design and evaluation of intelligent optical networks based on hybrid nodes with Ethernet and wavelength switching” (DORADO). The aim of the DORADO project is to investigate Optical OFDM, Wavelength Switched Optical Networks (WSON), Connection-Oriented Ethernet (COE), and Generalized Multiprotocol Label Switching (GMPLS) technologies as the basis for cost-efficient, high-speed, flexible and dynamic optical transport networks. This is done from an integrated approach that includes technological aspects of modelling, design, performance evaluation and experimentation in the ADRENALINE Testbed® of both optical communication systems and optical networks. The CTTC Optical Networking Area participates in the research project ENERGOS (Tecnologías para la Gestión Automatizada e Inteligente de las Redes de Distribución Energética del Futuro), funded by the Spanish Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Trade (MITYC) within the call 5 of the CENIT - INGENIO 2010 program managed by the Centre for the Development of Industrial Technology (CDTI). The project is led by Union Fenosa, and the CTTC participates subcontracted through an industrial collaboration contract. ENERGOS is focused on technologies for the intelligent and automated management of the future electricity distribution networks.

The European Commission has funded the Integrated Project STRONGEST (Scalable Tunable and Resilient Optical Networks Guaranteeing Extremely-high Speed Transport) within 7th Framework Program (FP7) for Research and Technological Development - Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) Work Programme (FP7-247674). The project is led by Telecom Italia, and is relying on the participation of the CTTC Optical Networking Area. STRONGEST is a three-year project starting on January 1st 2010.

KDDI R&D Labs (Japan) has awarded a industrial grant to the CTTC Optical Networking Area in order to develop the research project Inter-domain all-optical transport Networks - Phase 3 (RAION3). RAION3 covers two main topics: interoperability studies of multi-domain translucent transport networks using the Path Computation Element (PCE) architecture, and the performance evaluation of OSNR-aware path computation algorithms. The Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation (MICINN) has funded the fundamental research project DORADO (Design and evaluation of intelligent optical networks based on hybrid nodes with Ethernet and wavelength switching ) led by the CTTC Optical Networking Area, within the Plan Nacional de I+D+i 2008-2011 program (TEC2009-07995). The Spanish Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Trade (MITYC) has funded the CELTIC projects TIGER2 and 100GET for the year 2009, within the AVANZA I+D Plan (TSI-020400-2009-113 and TSI-020400-2009-120). The CTTC Optical Networking Area participates in both projects.

Joint activity under the framework of the FP7 ICT NoE BONE project.

The Optical Networking Area will participate in the 35th European Conference and Exhibition on Optical Communication (ECOC) being held in Vienna, Austria, on September 20 – 24, 2009 with the paper titled Experimental Field-Trial of Multi-domain PCE-based Path Computation for OSNR-aware GMPLS enabled translucent WSON in collaboration with KDDI R&D Labs (Japan). Joint activity under the framework of the RAION2 and GAUDI projects.
Jun 3rd, 2009 - New magazine publication
The paper Challenges for GMPLS lightpath provisioning in transparent optical networks: Wavelength constraints in routing and signalling has been accepted for publication to the Optical Communications Series of IEEE Communications Magazine in the August 2009 issue.

The Optical Networking Area will participate in the 11th International Conference on Transparent Optical Networks (ICTON) held in Island of São Miguel, Azores, Portugal on June 28 - July 2, 2009 with three invited papers titled Experimental Evaluation of the Link Cost Impact in OSNR-based IRWA algorithms for GMPLS-enabled Translucent WSON in collaboration with KDDI R&D Labs (Japan), Signal Processing Based on Trigonometric Transforms for High-speed Optical Networks in collaboration with UNIROMA3 (Italy), and Improving IA-RWA Algorithms in Translucent Networks by Regenerator Allocation in collaboration with UPC-CBA.

The Optical Networking Area will participate in the 14th European Conference on Networks and Optical Communications (NOC) and the 4th Conference on Optical Cabling and Infrastructure (OC&I) held in Valladolid, Spain on June 10-12 2009 with three papers titled On combining multi-layer performance information to improve QoT awareness in probe-based IRWA schemes in collaboration with NICT (Japan), On the challenges of finding two link-disjoint lightpaths of minimum total weight across an optical network in collaboration with UPC-CRAAX, and Unified GMPLS-based control of Carrier-grade Ethernet over DWDM.

The papers Effects of Outdated Control Information in Control-Plane-Enabled Optical Networks with Path Protection in collaboration with POLIMI (Italy) and Enhanced BRPC for multi-area PCE-based path computation in Wavelength Switched Optical Networks under Wavelength Continuity Constraint in collaboration with UST-IKR (Germany), submitted to OSA Journal of Optical Networking Special Issue on Optical Networks for the Future Internet, have been accepted for publication to the inaugural issue of the new IEEE/OSA Journal of Optical Communications and Networking (JOCN) in June 2009. This new journal merges OSA Journal of Optical Networking (JON) with IEEE ComSoc's Supplement on Optical Networking and Communications, which is published with the Journal on Selected Areas in Communications.

Jan 9th, 2009 - Collaboration Agreement
A Collaboration agreement and Technology Transfer project with KDDI R&D (Japan) has been signed. The project RAION2 (Interdomain all-optical transport Networks Phase 2) will focus on inter-domain all-optical transport networks with Path Computation Elements (PCE) and will continue the research and technology transfer activities of Phase 1, carried out during 2008.

The Optical Networking Area participates in the CELTIC 100GET (100 Gbit/s Carrier-Grade Ethernet Transport Technologies) project, funded by the Spanish Ministry of Industry. The 100GET.es project starts on September 1st 2008 and ends on December 31st 2010.
